On Sex and Gender . 2008 - 2013

On Sex and Gender is a series of portraits that seamlessly merge two individuals of "opposite" sexes. The resulting characters are hyper-realistic assemblages of a model’s face with a mix of genitals, secondary sex characteristics, body parts, lines, and forms—all of which are displayed in a performed posture. In short, these are many of the apparatuses for the creation of gender identity. I chose The people who participated in this project based on their physical attributes, as well as for the interest they showed in taking part in my research.

The original idea behind this work is to understand what constitutes men and women in relation to the body and its expression. In other words, what is the relation between sex and gender? Are sex and gender separate entities? How do we understand the cultural perception of a male and a female body given the very tangible multiplicity of gender in relation to the apparent duality of the sex?

Through my project I came to realize that gender and sex nurture each other to the point that it is impossible to approach them as distinct entities. They form the body: the meeting place of the perceived duality of the sexed and gendered subject. Using photographic technologies, I sex, resex, and unsex my models. They acquire other bodies. Photography and digital manipulation permit the symbolic remaking of the single sexed body into the infinite realm of possibility.

On Sex and Gender est une série de portraits mêlant les corps de deux individus de sexes différents. Les portraits ont été façonnés en assemblant des visages, des parties corporelles, des organes génitaux, des caractères sexuels secondaires et des postures.

J’ai choisi les modèles en fonction à la fois de l’intérêt qu’ils ont porté à ce projet et de leurs attributs physiques. Je recherchais des personnes qui n’ont pas une idée figée de ce qui définit le féminin et le masculin et qui ont un rapport particulier à leur corps.

Je cherche à comprendre ce qui constitue l’identité de l’homme et de la femme, et quel rapport chacune de ces catégories sexuelles entretient avec le corps et ses expressions. En d’autres termes, quel est le lien entre le sexe, le genre et le corps?

Durant le processus de travail, j’ai réalisé que le sexe et le genre maintiennent une relation étroite qui s’exprime dans le corps. Le corps, lui, est asexué ; il n’est ni sexe, ni genre ; il est multiple.

Grâce aux technologies photographiques, je fais, défais et refais mes sujets. Ils acquièrent des corps différents. L’image permet le dépassement symbolique de l’unicité du corps et donne ainsi accès à un infini de fantasme et de possibilités.
